BOP Custody Release Routes
BOP custody follows a federal prosecution or sentence. It is not the next routine step after a Somerset charge. A person may first be held by the U.S. Marshals Service and later delivered to BOP after conviction.
A past BOP release date and location marked RELEASED mean the person is no longer in BOP custody. That result does not answer whether federal supervised release continues or whether another authority assumed custody.
| Agency | Role |
|---|---|
| USMS | Federal pretrial, court, and transport custody |
| BOP | Federal sentence and institution record |
| County or NJDOC | Separate state or local authority |
Note: A BOP location of RELEASED ends federal prison custody but does not establish completion of federal supervised release.
Confirm BOP Custody Release Records
Search the BOP locator by register or agency number when possible. Name and demographic fields are an alternative, but identifiers reduce false matches. BOP covers people released after 1982 and updates daily.
- Enter the federal number or exact name.
- Compare identity fields and register number.
- Read the location and release date together.
- Treat a future date as projected.
- Check other systems only when the case facts support them.
The Somerset release search applies to a separate county episode.
BOP Custody Records Contact
The public BOP locator is the first federal contact route. It covers BOP records released after 1982 and updates daily. Additional federal records may require BOP FOIA, while older records may require the National Archives.
Federal Bureau of Prisons
BOP Inmate Locator
No Somerset County federal institution address or phone is supported by the research.
Use the register number when known. A focused request should identify the person, federal number, and bounded custody dates.
BOP Locator Release Fields
The official BOP locator field guide explains the federal release date and location labels.

The captured federal guide supports reading RELEASED, UNKNOWN, and projected dates without treating them as county custody results.
BOP shows name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. Match the federal number before relying on a common name.
| Result | Reading |
|---|---|
| Past date and RELEASED | No longer in BOP custody |
| Future date | Projected and subject to change |
| UNKNOWN | Release date is undetermined |
| Named facility | Current BOP placement shown |
A BOP release does not end supervised release or rule out custody elsewhere.
Federal Custody Before BOP
The U.S. Marshals Service prisoner program holds federal prisoners from court-ordered custody through acquittal, release, or delivery after conviction. It has no verified public person locator comparable to BOP. Its Prisoner Tracking System description confirms that access is controlled.
When BOP has no record but federal pretrial custody is known, a focused USMS FOIA request can seek an existing custody and disposition record. Privacy and law-enforcement exemptions may limit disclosure. USMS generally does not release prisoner mugshots.
This federal path should not be mixed with the Somerset-to-Morris county arrangement.
BOP Custody Release Destinations
A BOP location of RELEASED means the federal prison agency no longer holds the person. The destination can still involve federal supervised release, immigration detention, or a separate state or county authority. BOP’s compact public result does not display every post-prison obligation.
- Federal supervised release
- Court-ordered oversight after imprisonment, distinct from BOP custody.
- USMS movement
- Federal court or transport custody handled outside the public BOP locator.
- Immigration handoff
- ICE may assume separate civil detention after the BOP episode.
- Other jurisdiction
- A state or county record must establish its own custody event.
Read the federal release date with the judgment and any receiving record. A notification tool or absent local roster cannot expand what the BOP result proves.
ICE Custody After BOP Release
When federal documents identify an immigration handoff, the end of BOP custody and the start of ICE detention are consecutive events. The person has left the prison bureau but has not necessarily entered the community. Preserve the federal release date, register number, and any destination wording before opening ODLS.
New Jersey’s Trust Directive governs relevant state and local cooperation questions, but it does not turn a BOP discharge into a Somerset jail event. Its rules distinguish civil detainers from judicial warrants and restrict certain local actions. No ICE detention site was verified within Somerset County.
ODLS can show present detention or an ICE release reported within the past 60 days. After that public window closes, the federal record and any contemporaneous immigration documents become more important than a blank search.
After BOP Custody Release
Federal release can include supervised release, which is distinct from New Jersey parole or county probation. The BOP locator does not establish the terms or completion of that supervision.
BOP also warns that First Step Act recalculations can make a displayed date temporarily stale. Preserve the result and verify a time-sensitive exit with the responsible federal office.
If ICE or another agency assumes custody, the BOP exit remains valid for its own system but is not community release.
BOP Records After 1982
The locator covers federal inmates released after 1982. Older records may require the National Archives. For a newer incomplete result, BOP FOIA can seek an existing record. Name the person, register number, and bounded dates. RELEASED as location means no longer in BOP custody. UNKNOWN means the date is undetermined. A future date is projected. BOP updates daily, but First Step Act recalculation can make a date temporarily stale.
Federal supervised release is not continued BOP incarceration, yet it may impose court-ordered conditions after prison. It is not New Jersey parole. A BOP result also does not turn a Somerset county case into a federal matter. Keep the docket, prosecuting authority, and inmate number aligned.
Note: Federal releases before 1982 may require archival research because they fall outside the public BOP locator coverage.
BOP and ICE Transfer Checks
A federal prison exit can be followed by immigration detention or custody on another authority’s warrant. When the destination suggests ICE, use ODLS promptly because its released-result window is limited. When a state or county authority assumes custody, consult that agency’s record. The BOP result remains proof of the federal exit only.
No federal prison was verified in Somerset County. This route is therefore a jurisdiction-specific fallback for federal prosecutions. USMS may hold a federal prisoner before BOP placement, and its access-controlled tracking system is not a public locator. A focused USMS FOIA request can seek a custody disposition, subject to exemptions.
Each system answers only its own question. Pair the BOP date with the federal court record or receiving-agency entry when the destination matters.
Federal Release Record Limits
BOP’s public result contains a compact set of fields: name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. It does not provide the full federal judgment, supervised-release terms, a county disposition, or an immigration result. The federal court record supplies the sentence and later orders. The BOP entry supplies the prison-custody status.
A person can have separate records in more than one sovereign system. A past Somerset arrest does not establish BOP custody. Likewise, a federal release does not answer a later New Jersey matter. Search another system only when a docket, warrant, transfer record, or other reliable fact supports doing so.
For a USMS episode, request the existing custody start, end, and disposition category for bounded dates. Identity requirements and exemptions may apply. Do not expect a public USMS locator or routine mugshot access.
Note: A federal locator result should be saved with its search date because custody status and projected dates can change.
When a release date is unknown, do not estimate it from sentence length alone. Credits, court orders, and recalculation can change the federal result. The displayed BOP field controls until an official record supplies a newer fact. For an old release before the locator’s coverage, move to archival records rather than interpreting an empty search as proof that no federal custody occurred.
Somerset Federal Custody Context
The June 2024 local custody change does not create a federal prison route. Somerset County Jail became a limited short-term court hub, Morris County Correctional Facility began holding longer-term Somerset detainees through May 2029, and Middlesex County Adult Correction Center remained the earlier interim destination. All three are county-level placements.
BOP applies only when a separate federal prosecution or federal sentence places the person in the federal system. Leaving Somerset for Morris is therefore not a BOP admission, and leaving Morris does not establish a federal release. The register number, federal docket, or receiving-agency entry must connect the person to BOP before the federal locator is used. That clear boundary preserves the local facility history while keeping the BOP result tied to the authority it actually proves.
Note: Neither the Somerset hub nor the Morris shared-services placement creates a BOP record without separate federal authority.
