Morris Facility Release Routes
The Morris County Sheriff’s Office operates the correctional facility and holds longer-term Somerset detainees under the shared-services agreement. A short custody episode can end through a court-ordered pretrial release, bail where applicable, time served, dismissal, or completion of a county sentence. Yet the word “release” can also describe the end of custody at one building. A person may go to Morris County Correctional Facility, NJDOC, court, or another agency without gaining freedom.
Read the exit authority and destination together. An actual date and time show when Somerset custody ended. The disposition explains why. A receiving-agency field then distinguishes a community release from a transfer. Death may also appear as an administrative out-of-custody event and must never be described as community release. These details make the booking and release record far stronger than roster absence.
| Exit entry | What it means |
|---|---|
| Pretrial release or bail | Physical jail custody ends while the court case continues. |
| Time served or completion | The custodial term ends, though another order may remain. |
| Transfer | Somerset custody ends and confinement continues elsewhere. |
| NJDOC commitment | The person enters the state correctional system. |
Confirm Morris Facility Release Records
No verified official Somerset web roster or recent-release archive is available. Start with the physical custodian. Call the jail for a very recent short stay. Ask about the disposition of the identified custody episode and whether the person went to Morris. If the stay lasted longer after June 2024, Morris records may hold the physical exit entry. The Somerset court file remains the legal anchor even when another county housed the person.
- Identify the full name, approximate booking date, and any booking or SBI number.
- Call Morris Facility and ask whether the exit was release, court movement, or transfer.
- If Morris housed the person, request Morris admission and exit records for the bounded dates.
- Check the Somerset court disposition for the order that caused release or transfer.
- Use NJDOC, BOP, or ICE only when the facts point to that separate system.
The full county search and record-request sequence is set out in the Somerset County released inmates search. That route also explains how to reconcile a jail entry with a court judgment and supervision record.
Morris Facility Records Contact
Morris records is the first contact for the physical exit, while Somerset courts maintain the underlying case. Use Morris OPRA for the existing admission and exit record.
Morris County Correctional Facility
43 John Street
Morristown, NJ 07960
Records: 973-631-5174
Administration: 973-631-5413
Ask for the actual exit time, disposition, releasing authority, and destination. Use Somerset separately for BCI or court records.
Note: Use the Morris records number for custody details and the separate administration number only for broader facility matters.
Somerset BCI Exit Checks
The Bureau of Criminal Identification adds a local fact that helps explain the exit record. Its official page says every inmate is checked for warrants and fingerprinted before bail release, release for time served, or transfer to another institution. Those are three distinct outcomes. A pending warrant or outside hold can stop a court-authorized release from becoming a community exit.
Ask for existing records tied to the named episode. Useful fields include the booking number, admission time, charge or case identifier, release authority, actual exit time, disposition, and destination. If another agency assumed custody, the receiving-agency entry is vital. A booking photograph should be requested separately because access can depend on record-specific exemptions and privacy review.
Note: The court order explains legal authority, while the jail entry confirms when physical custody actually ended.
Somerset and Morris Jail History
The local facility map changed in June 2024. Somerset retained its jail as a limited court and detention hub, while Morris began housing longer-term Somerset detainees and sentenced county prisoners under a five-year shared-services agreement. Morris reported that nearly 80 Somerset inmates moved during June 3 through June 6. The agreement runs through May 2029. These dates matter when choosing which office may possess the exit record.
The county said the Somerset facility had operated below 25 percent of capacity. That figure explains the change but is not a release rate. It cannot be used to estimate annual bookings or releases. A Somerset case also remains in the Somerset/Hunterdon/Warren Vicinage after a physical transfer to Morris. Researchers often need Morris custody data and a Somerset court disposition for the same episode.
The official shared-services announcement documents the transfer and term. It is the source for this operational history, not evidence that any named person was released.
Morris Facility Release Destinations
A Somerset detainee can physically leave Morris while the Somerset case remains active. Direct community release may lead to the tri-county vicinage’s Pretrial Services or Probation unit. Return transport can place the person back in Somerset for court. State commitment begins an NJDOC record, while another receiving agency means confinement continued elsewhere.
- Morris community release
- The exit record identifies the court authority and actual departure.
- Somerset return
- Physical movement back to the case county, not final freedom.
- NJDOC delivery
- A statewide prison or residential custody episode follows.
- Reentry planning
- Morris services may prepare documents and appointments before exit.
The Morris Reentry Program can continue case management after release, but participation is not evidence that the exit occurred. The custodial log and Somerset order remain the proof pair.
ICE Holds and Morris Releases
Morris records should state the receiving authority when an immigration transfer follows a Somerset detention. The absence of a verified Somerset ICE contract means federal immigration custody cannot be assumed from a person simply leaving the Morris facility. A transfer entry or other case-specific document must supply that link.
New Jersey guidance distinguishes a civil ICE request from a judicial warrant and sets limits, exceptions, and notice duties for local agencies. Those rules affect how the Morris exit is described, but they do not establish the outcome of the immigration matter.
If ODLS is relevant, search promptly. Its public coverage of released ICE detainees reaches back only 60 days. Keep the Morris exit time and destination beside the federal result so a custodial handoff is not called a community release.
After Morris Facility Release
The Morris Reentry Program works before release on documents, identification, transition plans, appointments, and continued case management. It does not prove that a named person has left custody.
Release may lead to Somerset Pretrial Services or Probation. A state commitment leads to NJDOC, and a later state release may involve parole. Pair the Morris exit record with the correct Somerset order.
Release does not erase the case. Dismissal and expungement have different legal effects.
Note: Participation in the Morris Reentry Program supports transition planning but does not establish that a named detainee was released.
Morris Release Record Pairing
Morris supplies the physical custody exit, while the Somerset case supplies the legal reason. Request both when a release or transfer must be distinguished. A complete result states the actual time, disposition, authority, and destination, then matches those facts to the Somerset order.
Note: A Morris exit record for a Somerset commitment should be matched to the Somerset court order that authorized the movement.
Morris Custody Evidence
The official Morris jail page and shared-services announcement establish the physical-custody role. Neither offers a public browser release archive. Phone verification and a bounded records request are therefore primary channels, not secondary fallbacks. Returned mail is only a clue because transfer causes it too. General property rules allow advance send-out or authorized pickup on a visiting day, but no release-day property rule, release door, hour, or waiting area is published. Those details must be confirmed directly rather than assumed.
Morris reported capacity for 524 and a point-in-time multi-county population near 304 when the agreement was approved. Those figures describe operations, not release volume. They cannot support an annual rate or average stay.
