NJDOC Custody Release Routes
A Somerset person enters NJDOC only after a state commitment. A Somerset transfer date is not an NJDOC Date Out-of-Custody. NJDOC may place the person in a prison or a Residential Community Reintegration Program anywhere in New Jersey.
Date Out-of-Custody records the end of a listed incarceration period. Current Facility and later history must also be checked because a past exit can coexist with readmission. A residential program remains a supervised placement.
| Route | Correct reading |
|---|---|
| County to NJDOC | Transfer into NJDOC custody |
| Prison to RCRP | Ongoing community residential placement |
| Date Out-of-Custody | Exit from that NJDOC episode |
Note: A current Residential Community Reintegration Program placement remains an NJDOC placement and should not be labeled full discharge.
Confirm NJDOC Custody Release Records
Open the NJDOC offender search in a normal browser. Automated access may meet a WAF. Search by name or SBI number, compare aliases and Somerset county of commitment, and open the matching history.
- Check Current Facility for an active placement.
- Read each Date In-Custody and Date Out-of-Custody pair.
- Compare the commitment and case fields to the Somerset matter.
- Read Current Max Release Date only as a changing calculation.
- Check for later admission before confirming release.
The Somerset County released inmates search covers the prior county episode when needed.
NJDOC Custody Records Contact
NJDOC offender information is the correct public route for a state-sentenced Somerset person. Somerset County OPRA cannot supply an NJDOC incarceration history. Use the NJDOC offender page, then seek NJDOC records when the public entry does not resolve the episode.

NJDOC Release Search Fields
The official NJDOC offender search is the correct public entry point for a Somerset state commitment.

The captured form shows the statewide search route that must be used before reading Current Facility and Incarceration History.
Read Current Facility first. Then open Incarceration History and compare Date In-Custody with Date Out-of-Custody. County of commitment and commitment number help tie the record to Somerset.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current Facility | Active prison or residential placement |
| Date Out-of-Custody | Exit from the listed state episode |
| Current Max Release Date | Changing maximum-date calculation |
| Parole Eligibility Date | Eligibility threshold, not release |
A later admission can supersede an older exit. Read the whole history before concluding that the person remains out.
Somerset State Commitment Path
No main NJDOC prison is located in Somerset County. A sentence of one year or more may lead from the county holding system into statewide custody. The county record should identify commitment or transfer; NJDOC then controls the prison episode.
NJDOC reported 201 incarcerated people by Somerset county of commitment on January 1, 2026. That count included institutional, residential or county-jail category, and interstate placements. It is a one-day population measure, not an annual release total.
A state prison discharge must therefore be confirmed in the NJDOC record, not inferred from departure from Somerset or Morris.
NJDOC Custody Release Destinations
NJDOC movement has its own state terminology. Placement in a Residential Community Reintegration Program or halfway house remains a current correctional placement. A Date Out-of-Custody may instead mark prison release to State Parole Board supervision, sentence completion, or another documented state exit. Current Facility and later history decide which description fits.
- RCRP placement
- Community residential custody overseen within the NJDOC system.
- Parole release
- Prison custody ends while State Parole Board supervision begins.
- Maximum expiration
- The state term reaches its calculated end, subject to the record.
- Readmission
- A newer state episode follows an earlier out-of-custody date.
A New Jersey VINE alert can flag NJDOC movement, but NJDOC incarceration history is the durable public source for the discharge event. Somerset court probation remains separate from state parole.
NJDOC Detainers and ICE Transfers
A state sentence can reach its listed endpoint while another lawful custody basis affects the destination. The NJDOC record and any receiving-agency entry must show whether the person entered the community or moved directly into different custody. A civil ICE detainer is not interchangeable with a court-issued warrant.
The New Jersey Immigrant Trust Directive guidance places limits on detention and notice based on civil immigration requests, with defined exceptions and notice rules. No Somerset County ICE detention contract was found. ICE should be checked after a state record or case fact identifies immigration custody, not as an automatic step for every NJDOC discharge.
ODLS retains released-from-ICE results only for the preceding 60 days. Save a relevant result promptly and keep it distinct from the earlier state Date Out-of-Custody.
After NJDOC Custody Release
A Date Out-of-Custody can lead to parole supervision rather than unconditional discharge. Contact the State Parole Board when current supervision matters. Probation is a separate Judiciary sentence and should not be treated as parole.
A parole grant is prospective until the effective release event occurs. Revocation or a new sentence can create a later custody episode. Read current status and the full incarceration history.
Discharge also does not erase the court case. Dismissal and expungement have different effects under New Jersey law.
NJDOC Dates and Credits
Current Max Release Date is not a promised gate date. It is the latest maximum-release calculation after earned days and days added for negative conduct. NJDOC says it may change at month-end. Current Parole Eligibility Date is separate and only marks possible Board consideration. Commutation credits can affect the maximum date, while misconduct can cause forfeiture. A mandatory minimum still controls. The No Early Release Act applies an 85-percent parole-ineligibility term to specified first- and second-degree offenses, not every prisoner. Resentencing, corrected credits, another sentence, or a detainer can alter the path.
A parole grant can set a future date and conditions, but new information may lead to rescission before release. Date Out-of-Custody remains the public confirmation that the listed state episode ended. A later Date In-Custody can show return. Read both events.
Note: Current Max Release Date may change at month-end, while Date Out-of-Custody records an actual state custody exit.
NJDOC ICE Detainer Limits
An immigration detainer and a judicial warrant are different. New Jersey’s Trust Directive restricts action on civil ICE requests, subject to defined exceptions. When a state record shows transfer to immigration custody, ICE becomes the next system. That transfer is not a community discharge. ICE released results last only through its short public window, so preserve the NJDOC exit and receiving-agency record together.
County, state, parole, and immigration records prove different events. A reliable result states which agency ended custody, the exact date, and whether another agency took control. It never treats a missing name as a release certificate.
NJDOC Incarceration History Review
Incarceration History lists periods in and out of state custody. A past Date Out-of-Custody proves that one listed period ended, but it cannot show uninterrupted freedom afterward. Check for a later Date In-Custody, a named Current Facility, and any newer commitment. Aliases, SBI number, county of commitment, offense, sentence date, mandatory minimum, and maximum term help confirm identity and the correct Somerset case.
If the offender search returns no match, verify spelling and SBI number, try documented aliases, and use a normal browser. An absent record can mean the person never entered NJDOC and remained in county custody. It does not prove release. When state parole is plausible, the State Parole Board can verify supervision through its public-information route. A weekly eligibility notice remains advance notice, not a release decision.
Note: A state release finding is strongest when current placement, full incarceration history, commitment identifiers, and supervision status all agree.
Somerset Custody Map Since 2024
The local facility history determines when NJDOC becomes relevant. Since June 2024, Somerset County Jail has served as a limited short-term court hub, while Morris County Correctional Facility has housed longer-term Somerset detainees and sentenced county prisoners under an agreement running through May 2029. Middlesex County Adult Correction Center was the interim housing destination before that Morris arrangement.
None of those local movements is an NJDOC discharge. A Somerset or Morris exit becomes a state commitment only when the county record identifies transfer into NJDOC. The later state release is proved through Date Out-of-Custody, Current Facility, and the full NJDOC incarceration history. This sequence prevents the June 2024 county transfer map from being mistaken for a prison release timeline.
Note: The Somerset-to-Morris housing route remains county custody unless an exit record specifically documents commitment into NJDOC.
